Introduction:
For my midterm I decided to georeference a map of Philadelphia from 1855. I wanted to explore how the train tracks changed from 1855 to current day.
Sources:
For this project I utilized allmaps in the beginning. I found a map of Philadelphia from 1855 and with this map I was able to geolocate the map. And then I used ArcGIS to create an interactive web page.
Processes:
The process for me was kind of difficult at first. There was a lot of maps to choose from in allmaps so it was difficult settling on one. The georeferencing from allmaps was fairly easy process. But I started to have a harder time when I inserted it into ArcGIS. I didn’t really know what story I wanted to tell but after comparing the 1855 map to the current map I thought it would be interesting to see the difference in the train track paths.
Presentation:
For the presentation I created a website using ArcGIS where you can zoom in on the different tracks.
Significance:
Something that I learned from the approach that I chose is that you can investigate what kinds of geographic or location changes happened over time. This is related to digital humanities because I am utilizing digital visualization in order to present a certain narrative with the data. In my opinion data science focuses less on portraying a certain narrative.
